I have been finding some great deals on diapers between clearanced prints like the denim, santa, etc and coupon deals people have been sharing on facebook. This is great because with a newborn on the way and being unemployed I need all the help I can get!
I haven’t had a child in diapers in several years and a newborn in this house since 2006 so my memory is rather hazy when it comes to all the details. So, I’m coming to you and I need some help- er, advice.
While stocking up when I find a great deal is important being wasteful isn’t. I don’t want to just buy all size 1 and 2 just because I’ll need those first and then later find out I have some I don’t need. If they are clearance diapers that will mean I can’t even do a return or exchange so I need to make sure I get it right or at least don’t have more then I need.
So, I have a couple questions for you:
1. What size did your child remain in the longest?
I remember it being sizes 2 & 4 but other mom’s are saying different. I get that each child is different. Johnny was my long and lean baby and Gavin was short and fat. neither went through a whole package of newborn diapers though.
2. Roughly how long would you say you stayed in EACH size?
I know this varies but if I can try and play with numbers a little better I might be able to better focus on the sizes I need most.
Any other tips or secrets you’d like to share feel free. If you have a question of your own feel free to ask and maybe another reader will be able to help.
Our children spent the longest in 3s. Our son wore one pack of newborns. He was long and lean – has been his whole life. I have no idea how long we spent in 1s or 2s but remember that he was in 3s the longest and potty trained out of them by age 2-1/2.
Our daughter is currently 2-1/2 and has been wearing size 3 for about a year. The weight gain spurt is over and she is just a petite little princess. She is nearing the top of the weight limit for them but 4s are just enormous on her. I’m hoping she’ll become interested in potty training soon so we can move to underwear and stop buying the blasted things! =)

Our kids spent the most time in size 3 and 5/6 … they were out of 1 within two months but I had really big babies.
I honestly don’t remember. I do think we used a lot of 3’s and we were always buying Huggies overnights, so she would stay dry all night. She peed through her clothes a lot!
My 4th baby has spent a ton of time in size 3. I tried 4 but they are way too big. My girls who were heavier spent more time in size 4. I think my oldest boy spent a lot of time in size 2. I bought tons of diapers off of Amazon.com in sizes 1-2 and he outgrew those so fast I had 100’s left which I gave to a friend so thankfully they didn’t go to waste.
My kids were in threes forever. They were also in newborns for a long time but I have slow growing babies. Carson is four months old and still in size one.
I’d say I’ve been using tons of size 3.
#3 then #4. Sometimes you have to go #4 even though their weight is still within the #3. Simply because the #3 can’t hold up/absorb all the pee/poo.
we have been using cloth for so long. but usually use sposies for night time. I remember newborns for a very small amount of time, 1’s for awhile but 2’s even longer. #’s were for a very long time and of course 4’s the longest. I have my 9 mon old at night in 4’s they are a little big but her 2 yr sister is in 4s at night and I figured it would save from buying 2 sizes. plus it depends if your baby is fluffy or thin. walmart lets you order cases so sometimes thats cheaper. they even carry seventh generation! or diapers.com, love them. good luck
I know you’re asking about disposables, but if money is tight, I say switch to cloth (plus it’s great for a lot of other reasons). I quit my job after having my baby and cloth diapers, breastfeeding, and making my own baby food saved us a ton of money and of course, it’s all better for the baby. You can find some great deals on cloth and get your stash started now. Then it’s done, you don’t have to buy diapers again. Good luck!
Size 4 is definitely our most used size. But I’m a cloth advocate 🙂 You should try to get some cloth for reviews/giveaways, and you can give them to me if you decide you don’t like them 😉
