In our home we have been dying to see Despicable Me! When the Despicable Me DVD arrived my kids were so excited that we immediately set a time to watch it. We had seen the previews when it had been in the theaters but had never made it. So we had been eagerly anticipating the release of the DVD.
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden deep beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by an army of tireless, little yellow Minions, we discover Gru (Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. Yes, the moon!
Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.
One of the world’s greatest super-villains has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.
Gru is an evil man who does evil things… or so it seems. All his life he has spent hours planning on ways to steal the moon and he finally has the perfect plan. However, there is a new super villain in town and the bank won’t approve Gru because they think that the new guy could do it better. The new super villain steals the shrink ray from Gru and it was the main piece of Gru’s plan on getting the moon. He tries stealing it back but the new super villain has a security system that he can’t get through. Then one day he sees three orphan girls get through by selling him cookies! If only he had three girls selling cookies to get in there! So he starts a new plan in which he adopts the three girls: Margo, Edith and Agnes.
What he doesn’t realize is that he is going to need to take care of them until he can pull off his plot. The girls get a different side out of Gru that he hasn’t seen before. He begins realizing just how much fun they are. Even the little yellow Minions find themselves captivated by the girls. Before long they get Gru doing many “Dad” like things from ballet classes to amusement park trips.
But then the girls start becoming more of a distraction then a ploy and he has to decide between his evil plan to steal the moon or to continue taking care of the girls. Before he knows it his assistant has scheduled the girls to be picked up and be returned to the orphanage. What will Gru do?
Does Gru do what he can to keep the girls? Does he go off to steal the moon? Does he pull it off?
