Who are you?
My name is Sarah. I’m 23 years old and I’m from Yorkshire in England. I finished studying a literature degree in September at the University of Leeds. I wanted a break from academia so I decided to try my hand at making jewellery and selling. Six months later, I’m still doing it and am happier than I’ve ever been. I love it and I have met some of the nicest people I could ever wish to meet through it. I’m currently working at it full-time. I have two etsy shops to maintain (although one of them has been neglected of late) and I attend as many craft fairs as I can. It seems all my hard work is paying off as it’s just starting to take off. Huzzah!
Oh So Shabby, But Oh So Chic
How long have you been selling on etsy? I’m really an Etsy newbie, as I only set up my RubyRougeJewellery shop in September. I opened up a second shop – rubyrougebuttons – in December to showcase my button jewellery, although I’ve been working so hard on my original shop that it has fallen by the wayside! In the next few months I’m hoping to focus on it and completely overhaul it. Although I’m hoping both shops will grow and improve over the coming months and I’m really looking forward to seeing the results.

What made you decided to open up shop? I wanted to sell online and I’d heard about Etsy from a friend. It’s not that well-known in the UK, so I did a bit of research to see how well jewellery sellers from Britain did. I was quite surprised to find that some do incredibly well. On top of that I found it easy to use and thought the Etsy community was extremely supportive and friendly.

How did you decide on your shop name? I knew I wanted a name with Ruby in it, because it’s my absolute favourite name and it has a vintage but glamorous feel to it. That became my starting point. I also knew that I wanted a name with two words in it and that rolled off the tongue. I had decided alliteration was the way to do this. I eventually decided on Rouge because I love all things French and I felt it added a touch of elegance. I feel the name Ruby Rouge reflects the vintage, glamorous, elegant and feminine style of my jewellery.
Garden Party Earrings
What is your favourite item in your shop and why? This is a very difficult question because I’m always making new things and my favourite changes all the time! I think at the moment, it’s my Wizard of Oz inspired altered art necklace. I love it because I’m a massive fan of The Wizard of Oz and this pendant makes me think back to my childhood and it encapsulates magic, fantasy and dreams – three of my favourite things!

What are some of your favourite stores from other sellers on Etsy? I love AnitaCraftyCreations, she sells bath treats in the shape of cupcakes, cookies and tarts. I just adore her stuff! I also really like retrospettive, who sells the most beautiful purses.
