For our dog we currently try and brush his teeth as often as we rememeber (usually once a week :-/) and we also have tried the greenies before but we think they upset his stomach

Hello! First of all, your son & dog are absolutely adorable!! I bet they just love each other. My boxer boy Neo has insurance through Pet Smart and it includes cleaning his teeth once a year.
