Learning to ride a bike is a right of passage. I think every one has a memory of riding their bike. I had a bike that I loved cruising on through my neighborhood with reckless abandon. Oh to be a kid again… It was a Barbie bike and had pink, yellow, and silver tassels coming out of the handle bars. It was pink and glittery with a white basket in the front (aka pretty much the most amazing bike my little heart could dream of). Now that I have kids I want to pass down those fun bike memories to them. Hayden just turned 5 in December. We had tried the typical bike and training wheel route with him. He loved the idea of riding a bike but he HATED those training wheels. He didn’t trust them at all and so he would refuse to ride his bike. It was emotional and frustrating for him because he really wanted to ride a bike, and heart breaking for me as his mom to see him absolutely terrified of his bike.
Luckily I found an answer to all of our bike troubles. The Strider Balance Bike. It is a super light weight bike that has zero pedals. When I first learned about the bike I thought it was so strange that a kid could learn to ride a bike without pedals. But the absolutely brilliant idea of no pedals is that kids can trust their own weight to balance and pick their feet up when they are ready. There is no false security from training wheels. When Hayden rides his Strider Bike he is in total control.
First he slowly just walked with it, and then eventually he was committing his weight to the seat and running with it. When he first picked his feet up it was such a proud moment for both of us. He had accomplished something he was absolutely terrified of and now he can ride a bike with all of his friends. I wondered if he would be able to keep up with other kids because it has no pedals but he cruises on it! He pumps his legs and runs with it, then coasts with is feet up until he needs more speed. It is amazing. I have even caught myself telling him to “be careful” as he speeds down our driveway. A few months ago I never would have thought I would be telling him to “be careful” on his bike. He learned how to ride it so quickly! Now when he is ready for a pedal bike we won’t ever have to use training wheels. He has already learned how to balance on a two wheels, and adding in pedals will be a piece of cake.
It is super light weight. The Strider Balance Bike is 6.7 lbs! Hayden can easily pick it up and maneuver it where ever he needs to go. Up the curb, over rocks, through grass, or to totally pick it up and move it. It is crazy light and easy to move around. I also love that we can throw it in the car and go to the park, or a friends house.
Even though it is light weight, it is super durable. We have a few little walking trails in our neighborhood park. The bike can handle all the bumps, rocks, and rough terrain while we are on our walks. It goes from the grass to gravel easily. The wheels are a light EVA polymer tire that are maintenance free. These tires will never need air! Hayden has fallen a time or two while riding, nothing major, but the bike has held up amazing to a 5 year old riding it here, there, and everywhere. It is such a high quality bike. I know it will last him a really long time, and probably longer! We can pass it down to our other kids. That little bike will last a long, long time.
It is the perfect size bike for a huge age range of kiddos. It is made for 18 months-5 years old. The maximum weight of the rider being 60lbs! The seat is adjustable to fit all size of kiddos. Hayden is obviously at the oldest age range and we were able to receive a XL seat post. The seat adjusts really easily and quickly. Zero tools are required. Also when it is adjusted I know that the seat is super tight and secure. I am 150% confident that seat post isn’t moving unless I want it to. The large age range of this bike makes it an awesome investment. We don’t have to keep buying bike after bike to fit our quickly growing kids. Our cute neighbors also have Strider bikes for their 4 and {almost}3 year old. The Strider bike fits both of them great! It is so fun for our kids to ride together.
Hayden loves how cool it looks! It really does look pretty awesome. It has a padded handle bar and he loves the shiny red color. Strider bikes come in lots of different fun colors. It has a LaunchPad footrest that Strider has put in the perfect place for kids to set their feet on to coast. The whole bike has the look of a real competitive racer bike. Hayden often pretends to rev it up and race around on it.
I can tell that Strider Bikes were made with kids in mind. Strider wants kids to have FUN on their bike. I love how much confidence Hayden has riding his Strider bike. It is a night and day difference. I am definitely planning on putting Halli on her own Strider bike. It helps teach important motor skills that she will be able to master at an earlier age. Then her and brother can ride bikes together! I love that with the Strider Bike we can skip training wheels all together and my kids will both be able to ride in confidence.
Strider is a really great company as well. Their customer service is quick and helpful if you ever have any questions. They want kids to be successful on bikes just as much as parents do. They also have a 60 day “love it or return it” policy and there is a warranty on each bike for 2 years. Strider also wants kids to be safe while riding. They have done their research and have created the best and safest bike for kids. They do extra research to guarantee that it will be the safest bike for your littlest rider at 18 months and stay safe for your oldest rider. So what was already a great bike was made even more awesome by such a great company.
I honestly can not say enough good things about the Strider Balance Bike. It has been amazing seeing what a difference it has made for Hayden. You must check out Strider Balance Bikes for your kids. We won’t ever use anything else to teach our kids to ride a bike. The Strider Sports Balance Bike retails for $109 and you can find it available for purchase from our affiliate Amazon for under $100.
