I shared these on facebook the other day and stated these were the hardest cookies I ever made and that might not be exactly true but they were definitely time consuming. However, they are the prettiest and my favorite cookies this year. I found this on Pinterest and when I actually went to make it I was really disappointed with the bloggers directions. She was really vague and while I had many of the same questions that others had in the comments the blogger never responded to them. I really had to play around and I think I got it right.
Sprinkled Spiral Christmas Cookies!
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2/3 cup unsifted powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/2 sticks unsalted butter softened
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp of food coloring of your choice
- holiday sprinkles
Instructions
- Combine flour, baking powder, salt, & sugars until well blended.
- Add butter. Add in vanilla extract. You should have a dough at this point. If using a stand mixer it will form a ball on your paddle.
- Divide into two equal parts.
- Add the food coloring. I added quite a bit. It will darken and brighten when it rests. Remember this especially when choosing red.
- Roll out your dough between two pieces of wax paper. Do not remove from paper.
- Repeat with other color dough. Slide both unto a cookie sheet , refrigerate for about 1 hour.
- When firm remove top film from both layers. brush one with water lightly. Slap together and rub lightly to make them stick together.
- Allow to loose its firmness lightly. If it's too hard it will crack when you roll it. When a bit softened it will roll nicely. Use the now top layer of wax paper to help you roll it.
- Return to cookie sheet. Pour out sprinkles and roll over until the outside is covered. The bigger the sprinkle the better. I used tiny ones and it took two bottles.
- Wrap back up with bottom layer of wax paper. Chill until firm in fridge.
- Remove from paper and slice in 1/4-1/2 inch pieces and place on parchment lines cookie sheet. Cookies will spread so leave space.
- Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes after baking and then remove to rack. Store in air tight container.
I actually made this recipe twice. The second time was way easier. The first time I completely forgot to take pics out of frustration of lack of direction and the second time I didn’t take them until here out of forgetting. These photos start at the end of step 8. You were supposed to trim them and make them squares and I noticed that leaving them uneven really didn’t make a difference other then waste dough.
Return to cookie sheet. Pour out sprinkles and roll over until the outside is covered. The bigger the sprinkle the better. I used tiny ones and it took a whole bottle of Wilton’s Christmas Nonpareils.
Wrap back up with bottom layer of wax paper. Chill until firm in fridge.
Remove from paper and slice in 1/4-1/2 inch pieces and place on parchment lines cookie sheet.
Cookies will spread so leave space. See, I failed to do that so my cookies lost a bit of their shape.

These cookies were more work then I’m generally willing to give but they were delicious! I will definitely be making them again and the colors can be easily changed making them perfect year round!
I’m so happy to hear that they taste as good as they look. Because anything that is that much work needs to taste good or else it feels like such a waste! Those would look so beautiful wrapped as a gift. Love the look of them!
They are the only cookies I hid and are gone lol! I just need to practice them to keep them more round. Between placing them too close on the pan and the pressure I put on them cutting them the shape is more my fault.
loved this so much I pinned in on pinterest.
Great recipe! For people who dont want to put as much work into it, you could suggest using premade sugar cookie dough from the store and food coloring… How lazy am I? 🙂
The dough wasn’t the hard part is was all the chilling inbetween which you’d have to do anyways. lol
This is SUCH a cute and creative idea! Thanks for the yummy looking pictures.
these cookies look awesome, I want to try some of them. The peanut butter ones look really good
my son…..mr sprinkle…would love these
I just wanted to say that I am loving all of the holiday crafts and recipes you are posting. I saw on facebook that you were a bit confused if people like them or not because of the lack of comments, so I just wanted to say that I love it. And I am following you on pinterest too! Keep it up!
Those are very cool!
These cookies look absolutely fabulous! I live the bright colors and the sprinkles on the outside. This is a winner of a recipe!
Oh, those look amazing! So festive and fun! My kids are HUGE fans of sprinkles so I know that they would love these!
Wow, your cookies look awesome! I also found these on pinterest and made them in white and red. I think I left them in the fridge too long because it was difficult to roll them together 🙂 YUMMY!
These cookies are adorable! I must make them!
These look like so much fun to make! I don’t think my 5 year old with Autism would try them since he is very particular about food, but I know my 4 year old son and 2 year old daughter would LOVE them! Definitely going to have to make these tomorrow morning! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
Those are so cute! I have a marathon Christmas cookie baking day with my friends every year and will have to add these to the list for next year!
Wow my teacher is gonna love this thank you so much for the reciep😀.
