I didn’t grow up with traditions. Well, unless you count putting up a tree every year. I think it also results in the fact that I don’t really remember any specific Christmas from my childhood. I don’t want that for my boys. I want them to reflect back on their childhood and remember all the years we spent together as a family and remember the little things that made each year and moment stand out. I want them to take those special moments and make them special moments with their children.
Here are the things we do every year to keep our family traditions alive.
We make Gingerbread Houses. Right now it is more of a project I do with Johnny and then Gavin comes in and places a few candies here and there. We make it a holiday centerpiece for the rest of the holidays and then in January Gavin brings it to school for show & tell.
We make ornaments every year. We don’t just make one for our tree but enough for the family trees. Everyone looks forward to seeing what the boys made for the tree that year and the boys love it because they have a special gift for everyone they love.
I buy the boys Christmas jammies every year. This is something my mom did do for me that I have taken from my childhood to theirs. It is the one present they are able to open the night before. I wash them beforehand and everything. While of course the kids would prefer a present they enjoy getting a new pair of cozy jammies. I love it as a mom because I get cute photos of the boys together the next morning and I have some sort of control in what they are wearing in all of them.

I like to bake bread and give a loaf to all of our neighbors with a gift for the kids in each home. My son puts loose coins in our coin bank and we take it to donate, so others can enjoy something special for the holidays. I enjoy taking a photo of my kids and sending them out to close friends and family. One also gets tucked into each of their baby books. I also take a special photo every year in the same front window of the house where the kid’s faces are surrounded by holiday lights. I tuck this away for their daddy so he can have a piece of the family holiday. He is always away this time of year, being a military chaplain. I know he misses so much. I do what I can to make him feel like he was thought of and included in everything we do.
