Last week I co-hosted the first of four classes for the Tween Academy with host Rosalind Wiseman on TheMotherhood. Each class also has several selected bloggers to help with the chat. We’re all Mom’s of tweens and/or teens ourselves and we’re adding to the talk. If you have a child in this age bracket I recommend heading over to the remainder of the classes. They are useful and helpful. If you have a question you want to ask and get the opinion of several moms and an expert this is the place.
Rosalind Wiseman, who wrote Queen Bees and Wannabes – the inspiration for the movie ‘Mean Girls’, is leading all four Tween Academy classes, with fantastic teams of mom blogger co-hosts.
We would love to see you at the next three classes! Share stories, ask questions and chat with Rosalind Wiseman (click on the links below to sign up):
This Wednesday, Sept. 28 at noon ET – Tweens and Personal Hygiene – We will exchange ideas for helping our tweens adjust to the physical changes and challenges of reaching puberty.
Next Tuesday, Oct. 4 at noon ET – Tweens and Communication – Join us to chat about talking with your tweens – and helping them deal with conflicts at school, problems with friends and other nerve-wracking communication issues your tweens might face.
The next Tuesday, Oct. 11 at noon ET – Tweens and Building Self-Esteem – Let’s chat with Rosalind and each other about ways we can help give our tweens a sense of belonging and confidence.
The Tween Academy is sponsored by Unilever and Don’t Fret the Sweat.
In case you are wondering what you missed TheMotherhood did a fabulous job at recapping the entire event. You can read the recap here.
Also, Rosalind Wiseman has an upcoming TV appearances! She will be appearing with Anderson Cooper and Dr. Phil at 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 9 and 14 (check local listings for channels). Here is her recent blog post about the appearances can be read here.

“I think many kids don’t feel they can talk to their parents about school issues… or any issues for that matter. Communication with your tweens is SO important,” said temysmom.
This was the single biggest issue I saw as both a mom and a teacher. Because many parent’s first reaction to something bad is negative—shame, anger, punishment—kids feel afraid to approach them.

my favorite recap had to be about the mean boys and girls. i had my daughter who is in the 1st grade deal with this. i had a discussion with the teacher about it and there wasnt an resolve so i did the next best thing i went up to the school and have been to make sure she was ok. i have always belived that if you have a gut feeling about things that dont seem right and your child is telling you what is going on ,investigate!
My favorite recap was Staying Organized I agree w/ all those points especially about the importance of deodorant

So many good subjects to choose from! Since I have teens I love that so many of the bases got covered from staying organized and doing homework to bullying both online and off and especially self advocating since the tween/teen years are the first time most kids will have to speak on their own behalf (for the most part).

i can so relate to the stinky shoes issue!!! my daughter has the worst smelling feet ive ever smelled! we tried powders, sprays and antibacterial sprays, everything!! we finally figured out that certain brands are worse smellers than others, that has helped some. and replacing them frequently helps too.
the other part that really caught my attention was the responsibility issue. that we are still kind of struggling with. the boards in the bathroom is an idea, since she spends a lot of time in there in the morning. we have one in the kitchen. we might try that one too! thanks for a great article and look forward to hearing more from you guys!!

Communication is essential – make sure your tweens know they can come to you with problems. “If it isn’t a social issue causing our kids to be depressed it is grades, looks … there are so many more things that kids have to deal with today,” said Connie at Brain Foggles.

Here is my favorite part, “Pads of paper placed throughout the house so when your child tells you why they didn’t do their homework or why they didn’t deserve to get into trouble you can write down the details of their version of events”
Sometimes we end up in arguments because we all say something different. This is great!

I would say the part about speaking up for themselves and finding their own voice was my fave.
From experience I can say unless it is hugely physical, getting the school involved with mean girls/boys as one participant suggested is the worst thing kids can do and all 4 of my (now popular, older) girls agreed- it makes it worse and instead of having a couple / few pick on them they are then pretty much ostracized by everyone. Dev, my youngest who is now 18 trained as a member of peer review / counseling and this was pretty much a given- if they were labeled a tattle tail their social life plummeted.

I like the part about dealing with mean kids. I work on a school bus. Bullying is our number one issue. We don’t and won’t put up with it.
1. 2 cans of foot/shoe odor spray. One for your front door and one for the back. If you’re like me, sometimes when you walk into your house you are assaulted by this really bad smell and it gets you into bad mood. Then you look down to see your children’s shoes. Having a can to spray at those shoes (and worse, socks) really makes me feel better.
dealing with homework… omg there’s serious issues here 🙁
I like the part about helping tweens juggle the day-to-day stress by creating a study space for them and helping them stay organized

I liked the part about being an advocate for yourself. Too many times kids don’t want to stand up for themselves for fear of embarassment, or maybe because they don’t know how.
