Since the fire the days of having a warm house in the winter are gone. With heating costs so expensive I look for other ways to get a little bit of warmth. I was given a rice bag years ago and for the past couple of years I have loved it and it’s like a third arm around the house for me. Thing is this rice bag is anything but pretty and smells every time you heat it up. Then one day I received an email about Corn Warmerz. I had never heard of using corn as a warmer but the pretty patterns and different sizes caught my eye.
I was sent both the full corn microwave heat bag and the heat neck wrap in the Watermelon Bubbles pattern. The material was soft but a lot tougher then I thought. It’s like a canvas making it a lot more durable for the weight of the corn and the constant use.
I loved having the different sizes. It let you use them in different ways. Of course the large pack can be used for heating pack for your back, etc but I really just like using them for warmth purposes.
WHY HOT OR COLD THERAPY?
Heat and cold are the two most common types of, non-invasive, and non-addictive therapies. Heat and cold can be used alternatively and works by stimulating your body’s own healing force.
Many arthritis doctors recommend both heat and cold treatments to help reduce inflammation and ease the pain and stiffness that comes with arthritis.
Hot Packs and Heat Therapy: Heat therapy induces vasodilation: drawing blood into the target tissues. Increased blood flow delivers needed oxygen and nutrients. The warmth decreases muscle spasm, relaxes tense muscles, relieves pain, and can increase range of motion.
Cold Packs and Cold Therapy: Cold therapy produces vasoconstriction, which slows circulation reducing inflammation, muscle spasm, and pain.WHY CORN?
Corn has a larger surface area than rice or flax seed, therefore it retains the heat MUCH longer. I prefer the way our corn heat bags conform to the body with the added weight of the corn, allowing heat or cold to penetrate those hard to reach areas.
Rice is naturally a smaller grain and may scorch easily, giving off a foul odor.
Flax has a known tendency to be a fire risk when heated, especially if combined with essential oils, although any warming product should be monitored closely while being heated in the microwave.
Given the information above, our choice is to use 100% whole grain corn as our filler.HOW LONG WILL MY MICROWAVABLE HEATING PAD RETAIN THE HEAT?
Normally your microwavable heating pad will retain the heat for about an hour or so. Our large heat bags make wonderful bed warmers as they will retain the heat two to three times longer when placed beneath the covers.
One thing I really like is that the neck warmer is sewn into thirds. This is great for multiple reasons. One is that it helps it lay perfectly around your neck. Another, it makes sure that the corn evenly distributes and doesn’t end up at the ends. See my picture above? This is the rice bag I’ve been using. It’s pretty ugly huh? Well, it stunk at keeping the rice in one spot too. Because of the shape they just fell to one side or the other but didn’t evenly distribute.
