My son and I recently had an opportunity to review a cell phone from Kajeet. I was immediately interested once I read about the many child friendly features it had and all the child safety features it let me have! While I admit I was teetering on whether or not I wanted my son to have a cell phone at 8 years old I knew that he should have some sort of emergency only communication. Last year at school he got his days confused and took the wrong bus home. Needless to say he was left outside a locked up home with no way to get in touch with us. Of course once he didn’t come off the bus we immediately knew what had happened and found a very shaken scared 7 year old. Had he had a cell phone on him he would have been able to get in touch with someone and know he wouldn’t be alone for long.
We received the PINK SanyoKatana II to review. At first we were thrown being sent their only pink phone for my son to review (they have many cell phone options with over 10 phones to choose from!). He wasn’t loving the pink LOL! Although once you got over the color I had to admit the phone was actually nicer then mine! My hubby went right into “Man Mode” and almost refused that Johnny would have a pink phone. In the end we figured it would discourage him using it for non-emergency uses. Which worked by the way LOL!
I don’t know if it is because we reviewed the phone or if they all work that way but we got a long distance phone number (317- where is this?). This would have made it hard if this was going to be a phone for a teenager.
I really liked the online side of this phone. It let me monitor all the calls that came in and out of his phone. I was able to tell how long he was on for and who he was calling and who was calling him. I also liked that I had the ability online to restrict calls or the phone all together.
I tested this phone until the minutes we were given ran out so that I could get a real feel for how it worked for us. I was really happy as he always had service when our phones did and the phone had all the capabilities of a regular phone including a camera! We did download a ring tone a one point but it only worked for when he turned his phone on and off. It was the same price as it would cost me to get a new ringtone.
Now, as the phone began to run out of minutes it would call the phone and let you know that it was running low. I wish instead it would have texted it because my son didn’t understand it and would just tell me “the phone people called with a message”. That didn’t help me much.
They can also text on the phone which is great. They are $.10 each or you can buy a TextPak for as low as $4.99 up to $19.99 for unlimited!
They offer many different plans where you can buy flat time at $.10 a minute or you can buy bundles for less. You can also purchase a GPS locator for an additional cost, this is great for tracking a lost phone (or worst case lost child!). For a listing of their plans click here.
One thing I would like to point out that really bothered me is that they charge you $.32 a day just to have the phone. That’s $9.92 a month! I think that’s crazy as the entire month of July the phone wasn’t used or even on and the $15 I put in towards minutes was eaten up almost just in charges. However, I really liked that I could pay with my Paypal account.
Overall, I am extremely happy with the phone and it’s abilities for me to track his usage I just wish it was a little more wallet friendly too!
