Face First Into the Coffee Table…

If you’re friends with me on Facebook you’ve heard all about Gavin’s fall yesterday. Around 6pm he tripped in the living room and fell face first into the corner of the coffee table ripping the corner of his eye open. He was so upset, there was blood everywhere, and even my 9 year old was shaking. Of course my background in emergency kicked in and I calmly picked him up and began to clean the area out. I noticed that the cut was really deep and pulled apart and knew instantly we needed to make a trip for stitches.
I called his Dr.’s office and asked if the evening Dr. was willing to do sutures and they weren’t willing to do facial ones and dreaded the trip to the ER. I called my Hubby and let him know we were off to the hospital. He told me I could handle fixing it myself as my kids have definitely been in need of stitches in the past but since I knew what to do I bandaged them the same they would at the ER and they were fine minus the bill. I explained how close to the eye it was and told him there was no way I was messing with this one and chancing an infection. I couldn’t get it to stop bleeding and we needed to go. I called my mom and dropped Johnny off and we headed to the local hospital.
We signed in and took a seat. There was only 2 other people there and it looked like they were ankle injuries and was relieved this wouldn’t take all night. That’s what I get for assuming. We sat there for HOURS! It was ridiculous especially since when we got there I asked if there was fast track and they said yes. If you don’t have that in your ER its a Dr and nurse reserved just for things like stitches, sprains, and quick things that don’t require monitoring. When I worked in the ER it was my favorite shifts.
Finally around 11pm we saw a DR and she said he’d need stitches. Her main concern was properly numbing the area and keeping him still with needles so close to his eye. He did so well! Especially since the last stitch wasn’t numb due to not being able to get that close. The nurses and Dr. was so impressed with how good he was they rewarded him with about 50 stickers and a big red popsicle.

Gavin really wanted to see his stitches but there was no mirror in my room so I snapped this shot of him with my camera so I could show it to him on the LCD screen. As you can see a red popsicle is all it takes to make my 3 year old happy as can be.

Due to this accident I lost all my prep time for a giveaway today while I’m at work. So make sure to check back tomorrow I’ll try to get two up to make up for it! In the mean time send happy thoughts to Gavin as it’s 90 degrees and super humid and he can’t get his head wet. No boating no swimming, no fun waterslides. Poor baby.
