It all started the day before Johnny was born. It was a Saturday night and Daddy & I were heading out to dinner and I realized that I had not had any fetal movement in quite awhile. I called the Dr. to let them know. They asked if on our way out we could stop into the hospital to take a non-stress test. They didn’t seem worried and even told me there was no need to rush. Daddy & I decided that we wanted to get it out of the way and decided to stop in before we went out to eat. We were wrong. We should have eaten first!
When we got there we went straight to the maternity floor and was brought directly to one of the labor rooms. They had me get into a Johnny (hee, hee) to check on my Johnny. They put straps all over my belly and started the test. Although I wasn’t feeling anything it turned out I was having contractions 4 minutes apart. They quickly called my midwife and checked me. Turned out I was also 4 cm out of 10 cm dilated.
They told me I was going to have a baby shortly and admitted me to the hospital. We made a few calls and shortly after our parents started arriving. A few hours later they checked me and I hadn’t progressed and they told me to get in the hall and start walking. I was greeted by a friend of mine getting wheeled in clearly in full on labor. I was so excited!
As the night went on our family left and hubby passed out. I was so excited about everything going on that there was no way I could sleep. It was late so I took a walk down the hall to check on my friend. I stayed with her until it was time to push. They had limits on how many people could be in the room and truthfully I really didn’t want to see a delivery just before my own. A couple hours later I was able to go in and see her beautiful new daughter!
I was so excited that shortly I would have my own beautiful baby.
A few hours later it was dawn and the Dr came in and checked me. I was still at 4mins/4cm. They were concerned that by staying up all night with my friend I wouldn’t have the energy for my own labor and told me to go home and rest. I was so upset. Home? Really!
They could see that I was so disappointed and assured me I would be back soon. They told me they wouldn’t even file discharge papers they were so sure of it.
Once we were home Daddy didn’t even make it up the stairs to our room. He crashed on the couch. I went upstairs and took a nap. I was woken up suddenly by sharp pains coming quickly after another. I was so worried that I’d be sent home again if it wasn’t the real deal that I dismissed it. I remembered being told that if you moved around and they went away it wasn’t real. I went down stairs to check on Daddy who was still peacefully sleeping. Still in pain. I decided that real or not I wasn’t going in without a shower and decided if I was still in pain afterwards I would do something about it. I took a shower. I got ready grabbed my bag and went downstairs. Daddy was still sleeping and I didn’t want to wake him so I sat in the chair and started crying from the pain. Daddy woke up and thought I was insane to just sit there and try to let him sleep. We rushed to the hospital. This was the real deal. I called my Mom and told her to hurry. I was less then a minute apart and after they prepped me for an epidural while we waited for my midwife to arrive I found out that I was too far along and had to go without. What!?!
My midwife when she arrived explained that I’d be pushing in minutes without it and hours with it. I didn’t want to have to go through it any longer and we agreed.
My mom came running in. She had been gardening and literally dropped everything and came running.
Johnny was coming so quickly. I started pushing shortly after getting there and suddenly they were telling me to roll this way and that. Sit up, sit back. I was so young and this was my first baby and all I knew was that panic was across my Mom’s face. I knew she’d tell me if something was really wrong. Suddenly the midwife called for a Dr. STAT and informed me Johnny was stuck in the birthing canal and he wasn’t breathing. I needed to push with everything I had or I was going to need an emergency C section. She ripped off all my monitors and stuck a huge needle into me and Johnny’s head. I pushed, he came.
I was all such a whirl wind. It was so amazing. Daddy stayed up by my pillow and couldn’t look much. My mom was front and center helping me with one of my legs. I was lucky that my neighbor that I babysat her little girls was on shift and was there to help as my nurse as well.
I was so fortunate. Immediately afterwards I was pain free. I hadn’t even torn through all that. I didn’t know I was supposed to wait to move and jumped right off the bed as everyone screamed NO! I didn’t know that my insides were gush and when I stood stuff just poured all over the floor. It was so gross. Yet, I was fine and just wanted a shower.
While healthy Johnny was under temperature and had to sit under a heat lamp. I cleaned up and went to my recovery room. I remember when they brought him back to me it was the most amazing feeling to realize I was a Mom. Me! I was a Mom!
