DIY Rainbow Cloud Wall Flag {Fun Crafts with Mom}

This was such a fun project for us. You could use it for a St. Patrick’s Day craft or as a rainbow cloud wall flag for a birthday party. Gavin loved being able to take a step up for the simple crafts and create something a little bigger too!

I originally saw the Rainbow Cloud Idea on Oriental Trading as knew I wanted to make something similar for St. Patrick’s Day. The one thing I requested to specifically make these was the Tissue Paper Strips. I’ve bought the big bulk of paper and tried cutting it and it never looks nice when were done. The clean look of buying them pre-cut really gave the craft a much cleaner look. Plus, now it saves our other paper for other fun crafts.

Supplies were minimal other than that and we already had everything else on hand in the house already.

Supplies Needed:

  • Tissue Paper Strips
  • Cotton Balls
  • Tape
  • Glue Stick
  • 3″ Circle Paper Punch
  • 3 Pieces White Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • White Yarn for Hanging

Start with your white construction paper and scissors. One piece you will want to keep whole but round the corners. This will be your main cloud piece. Next, punch circles from the remaining paper and line them around the solid piece and tape them down. Gavin really loved being able to use my big craft punches too!

To make it more interesting, I had Gavin count all the circles and then since he is practicing cursive in school right and then write the number in each circle. It was great practice for him and he’s always looking for any excuse to doodle.

Then take your glue stick and start sticking cotton balls all over it. He glued right over his writing but you could also glue the opposite side. Which ever side you glue make sure it’s the side you taped the circles down.

When you are done it will look like this. Great job, right? But it’s missing something!

A rainbow!

We lined up all the colors and started taping them down. First the purple, then red, then green and yellow, and finished up with blue and orange. This order was helpful in making sure when we flipped it over all the colors would be centered properly. Once you’ve taped them all down take one last long strip and make sure they are all secured down.

What kid doesn’t love to use the tape!

To hang from the wall was simple. I found two areas that had space between cotton balls in the front and made a hole with the end of a pen. I pressed a long strip of yarn doubled and knotted it in the FRONT. Pulled it through to go back out the front and knotted when I thought it would hang at a good length. Then I trimmed the yarn knots so they weren’t easily seen.

Then we taped around the holes in the back for support. These are pretty heavy and I worry it would eventually tear down if you had them up long term. We’ve had our rainbow cloud wall flag up for 2 weeks now and it’s held up great.

The best part is when the heat blows up from the vents and the rainbow strips flutter all around! If you’re looking for fun crafts make sure to check out all of Oriental Trading‘s craft ideas and follow them on Pinterest and Facebook too!
