We Can Make A Difference #ChildHunger #HunterGramPromo

Hunger can be a terrible feeling. Imagine being a child and being hungry and having nothing to eat. Even worse, imagine being the parent and watching your child go hungry and not be able to do anything about it. You may be thinking this doesn’t happen where you live but sadly the facts are shocking. I know I thought there was no way we had children in my area struggling with child hunger! Not in my backyard!

Wrong. I recently participated in a twitter party where they shared cold, hard facts about childhood hunger. It left such a raw pit in my stomach when I visited Child Hunger Ends Here and used their Hunger Map to map out my local area and see just how in need the kids in my area were.

When you think about the fact that my town only has 5000 people in it and my area has 14000+ people in need of food it’s mind blowing. I never would have guessed that there was that big of a need in my own backyard.

More than one in five children in the U.S., including more than one in four Latino children, may not know where their next meal is coming from. That’s nearly 16 million children, a number that could fill 8,000 playgrounds.

SIXTEEN MILLION CHILDREN. That number is just heart breaking. I can’t even imagine how our food banks are able to fight to keep up with those kind of numbers. The shelves must be struggling to stay full. I just showed you how my small area has over 14 THOUSAND people in need and guess what? We only have ONE food bank!

Children who experience even intermittent struggles with hunger may suffer serious, long-term consequences to their health, well-being and educational achievement. What’s more, being hungry robs kids of the promise of childhood – the ability to play, grow and learn.

Thankfully, ConAgra and P&G Brands are here to put a stop to Child Hunger! This year, ConAgra Foods’ goal is to donate the monetary equivalent of up to 5 million meals to Feeding America, and P&G’s goal is to fund up to 2 million meals. Together, we want to serve up to 7 million meals in 2014—and we’re counting on you to help us get there.

  7. Sadly hunger is a HUGE issue in our town as it’s a very poor population. Our 4H collects a lot of food to give to the homeless teen shelter and woman’s resource center.

  8. I’m gonna go peek through my fridge and pantry to see if I can find something on it with a code to enter.

I love that this is supporting kids in OUR country. While I don’t have a problem with helping kids who are hungry all over the world, it always bothers me that more emphasis is put on third world countries when we have so many that go to bed hungry here in the US. We can’t help others if we can’t help our own. I kinda feel the same way about overseas adoption.
