When it comes to being prepared I’m all for it. Especially in times of weather. One thing I’ve learned in my life it’s that while many things can be controlled- weather is not one of them. I do believe that by doing just a few basic things in advance can really help make the hard times when the storms hit more bearable.
Of course many like to point out that you never really know if you are going to get hit and its hard to be ready and afford to be ready but if you prepare with the right items it really isn’t a hardship. You just need some basics.
A flashlight.

With next weekend being daylight savings time we took the opportunity of the storm to check all our smoke and carbon detectors ahead of time. Ever since we lost our home to a fire this is something I never let slide. We have special detectors that are run by both battery and electricity but I’m totally coveting this Talking Alarm and I’ve been trying to get Hubby to switch the detector between the kids room to this one. The longest I have been without power is about 4 hours. It doesnt seem like a long time but when you have small kids it is.

A few years ago we were hit with 3 hurricanes in 6 weeks… we lost power with each storm and we were without it for atleast 7 days each time (one time it was 10 days). We’d get power back for a day or so and lose it again.

We have gone a week with no power. I was impressed that for 4 days we still had warm water from the hot water tank and everything in the freezer stayed good and cold.

Gosh, at our last home, EVERY time it was a thunder storm, we’d lose power for hours and sometimes a day or two. Where we are now, wow, GREAT. Only been without power for a day or so. It is scary to think we built a house where one has blizzards.. and NO woodstove.. we were very unwise, I think…………………….

tHE LONGEST i’VE BEEN WITHOUT ELECTRICITY IS 2 YEARS. We lived in a remote area of Alaska…no lights, Tv,etc. Not even running water . Then we got solar panels. What a treat!

A few hours. Very lucky though, because I was hit by Sandy and my next door neighbors lost power for over a week THREE TIMES with a baby 3 days older than mine (6 months old). I lost power for all of 10 minutes.
