The Spongebob Squarepants Burger King Commercial Controversy

Have you seen this ad on TV yet? The commercials are broken into sections, but here’s the whole thing in its entirety. I guess its got some mommies left with their panties in a bunch…

Me…well…I’m just left amused but rather speechless..

“Bootie is Bootie”…Isn’t it funny how we never notice things until they are pointed out to us? My kids are older so I am not so sensitive to these kinds of things but when my kids were little I would have been.

My 13 year old daughter blurted out “think with your dipstick” the other day (in a car oil commercial, but could mean something else entirely). I had to explain how she shouldn’t say that out in public. Kids pick up the darndest things.

  2. Hana says

The commercial is stupid funny but entirely inappropriate for children who are obviously the audience BK is aiming at. BK should know better.

hahah.. speechless is right.. and not in a good way. I’m not bothered by it at all.. just think it’s pretty ridiculous. I wonder why there was no one in the entire process of making this commercial who stood up and said.. “Hm, I think this is a really bad idea”.

  4. SarCraw says

To me this is just dumb, but I pretty much can’t stand all of BK’s commercials that have the creepy king in them. I don’t have kids so I don’t know how I would feel about it…

  5. Stacie's Madness says

i LOVE it, it makes me giggle… I can see why it would bunch SOME panties, but I think it is funny. 😀

  6. CraftGirlAlli says

I can see why it would bother some parents. But for me, I don’t see the big deal. You can’t sensor your kids from everything.

  7. Christine says

I definitely don’t think this commercial is kid-appropriate, but it’s freaking hilarious, so I don’t care. I think everyone needs to just relax for a minute. Kids aren’t thinking about sexual stuff. They’re thinking about Sponge Bob and laughing because butts are funny!

I must say I thought it was a rather “odd” commercial, but I simply changed the channel. I can understand it being a bit sexual – ish. SO I stand in the middle I don’t really care either way. I am a firm believer that if you don’t want your kids seeing things like this – switch the channel REALLY quick – it’s all you can as a parent.

It was amusing, I agree, but at the same time you have to wonder why/where do they come up with such things???

    1. It is so dumb that it is funny.

    2. My little ones watch OnDemand MickeyMouse Clubhouse and Backyardigans, once a day. WITH me right there singing and dancing with them. (No BK commercials to worry about there.)

    3. There is a remote. Parents who have their panties in a bunch should learn to USE the remote. sit with their kids during TV time and be able to shut off the inappr. stuff.

  10. Vanessa says

This did not bother me at all and I have a 3 year old and a 7 month old my daughter LOVES spongebob and the original song is worse and I have it on my PC and she just likes the beat she does not copy anything from that comercial she just laughs and says mommy they silly …so to me it is just another stupid thing on tv.

  11. Susan says

ok, the commercial is ridiculous and an ignorant way to tell potential customers that they carry sponge bob premiums. however, what is more concerning is that weird king…that is what nightmares are made of. he is yucky! i don’t think this ad will bring the people in. but i could be wrong. hooters is very successful
    😉

  12. Shell says

I totally agree with what Susan said above.

My biggest issue with the the BK king dude himself…he scares me.

  13. ♥Lisa♥ says

Its kind of funny (watching it once) lol. The BK king is what freaks me out. Dh likes all the BK commercials, they seem geared more towards the guy crowd. Maybe it’s a way to get dads to go to BK more and bring the kids, spend more money, lol. who knows.

  14. Corey~living and loving says

first off…I’m watched it….and it didn’t seem very successful in promoting burger king. so it is a lame commercial.

However, it does bother me on many levels. grow very tired of the media direting obvious sexual messages at children. Yes, the original song was worse…and it wasn’t directed at children.

I think it is good when parents protest such things. If we dont’ stand up for the innocence of our children who will?

  15. NICO Designs says

That was STUPID. I was left thinking that if I ate something from BK my rear would be even bigger and in the shape of a brick; and that is not a good thought!

  16. Jodi says

I hadn’t really paid much attention to that commercial before, and I don’t have kids either so I don’t know how I’d react if I did, but to me it was just a dumb commercial. Not worth getting too upset about, in my opinion.

Come stop by my blog, I gave you an award! 🙂

  17. Cee says

Actually a couple of my co-workers had their panties in a bunch today when they mentioned this commercial…however I don’t see anything wrong with it as a mother of two. A girl (2) and a son (7mths) when my daughter saw it and heard the song she was like “SpongeBob Mommy!” so she totally didnt’ even care about the squarebutt dancers. So BK you’re alright in my book. 🙂

Completely inappropriate commercial! I don’t want my child going to school shaking her bottom or saying butt or bootie. I am surprised that this is a commercial for a kid’s meal!
